About YOUTH Running Club

We started the Running Club as a way to develop young runners and train them to run a 5K, but also as an avenue to help build their confidence and self-esteem. This was open to 1st through 8th grade girls and boys, and we have had close to 40 kids involved every season!

This season starts early april

We meet twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, after school at the Tyrone Elementary School until 5:00 pm.  On Tuesdays we typically focus on speed work and fun games, and a portion of the time is set aside to build self-esteem and character, break into small groups, and pray together.  On Thursdays, we run at Reservoir Park and focus on longer distances and endurance.

Our theme for last season is "Run YOUR race!" based on this verse from Hebrews 12:1-2, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith..."  We have really emphasized that God has a specific plan for their lives, a "race marked out for them."  I have encouraged them weekly to remember that in running (and in life), they need to run their own race and not compare themselves to others.  When they grab hold of the fact that God has given them a unique purpose in life, they can walk securely in that purpose and really make a difference in the world!

After the 7th week of the club the majority of girls have improved their 1-mile time by at least 30 seconds with numerous girls improving their time over minute!

My favorite part of this club has been seeing these girls make progress from week to week in their speed and endurance along with their confidence! Their attitudes have shifted from not thinking they could do it, to believing in themselves and showing "I Can Do It!" attitudes.  During some of our training runs, I have heard these girls spontaneously chant, "I can do what?  ALL THINGS! ...through Christ who strengthens me!"

It has been a tremendous joy to train them and see them grow as runners and as strong young ladies.

If you know a girl in 1st-8th grades that would be interested, please connect them with us.
